The cause-and effect relationship between endometriosis and infertility is well known but unclear and of particular interest. To evaluate IVF-ET(in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer) cycle parameters, including pregnancy rates, a
retrospective
analysis of 143 consecutive IVF-ET cycles (99 patients), 32 in women with endometriosis(group I) and III without endometriosis (group II) has been performed. Patients were excluded who had had hormonal therapy within recent 6 months or had a
significant
male factor.
The mean age and duration of infertility were not different between the groups. The IVF-ET parameters, the mean number of oocytes retrieved(9.7¡¾4.1, 9.2¡¾5.2), the mean number of embryos transfered(3.4¡¾1.2, 4.3¡¾1.5), and cleavage rate(67.2%,
67.6%)
for groups I and II, respectively, were not significantly different. The pregnancy rates per embryotransfer was lower in group I(20.0%) than in group II(29.3%) but was not significantly different(p=0.23). Our results suggest that the presence of
endometriosis does not affect the oocyte quality or the embryo quality, and the reproductive outcome of IVF-ET is not significantly affected by the presence of endometriosis.
